Top Diet and Weight Loss Myths Exposed

Fad diets are the way to go
Ok some “fads” are far more superior than others. Most probably work to help peel off some pounds but the main question remains about whether a person can maintain their weight loss in a healthy manner. I believe weight loss should include a lifestyle change for maintenance that includes some leniency after goals have been met. Many fad diets would be difficult to maintain long term, so the weight could begin its return after initial efforts. Lifestyle change is likely the best solution to short term and long term weight goals.

Fat-free diets are good for you.
Fact is that our body relies on a certain amount of good healthy fats for optimal functioning. If you want to be concerned about fats, concentrate on healthy fats (such as plant-based fats) versus unhealthy fats (such as saturated fats and trans fats). Healthy fats are required for optimal nutrient absorption. So keep in mind that if you are eating super foods or taking supplements, you would do good to also have a handful of nuts, a chunk of avocado, or a teaspoon of flaxseed or coconut oil, which will help your body benefit from the nutrient content of the super foods or supplements.

Extremely low calorie diets or “crash diets” work best.
You may achieve short term success, but in the long run it can work against your goals. Fact is that when the body is suddenly deprived of energy (calories), it quickly will go into a “starvation” mode where it will begin conserving fat. In addition, the body will lose muscle as well as fat because the body will begin to break down muscle tissue to use as fuel. Muscles are metabolically active and require a certain amount of calories each day. When muscle is broken down and lost, metabolism is slower and calorie requirement is lessened. That means when the dieter returns to more “normal” eating patterns, it could spell disaster for their goal. Several (4-6) small healthy and balanced meals over the course of a day will keep metabolism at a more optimum level, combined with healthy regular exercise.

You don’t have to count calories
OK this may be true for some, but it’s important if you’re trying to shed pounds. It is very easy to over-eat and consume calories beyond what’s needed or desired if you are not paying attention. I LOVE sparkpeople.com for helping with this goal. They have mobile apps which make it easy to quickly punch in everything you’ve eaten and stay within your set goals, groups, and support which encourage!gf

Fattening foods mean rapid weight gain
It’s true that fattening foods, in excess, will lead to weight gain – but it takes 3500 calories of excess calories going in, beyond what’s being used – to gain a pound. An occasional night out over-indulging should not “do you in”, and any immediate weight gain from such a splurge is likely just temporary water weight. Many experts agree that allowing yourself a treat or indulgence is good for long term success.

Carbs are bad and make you fat
Your body needs carbohydrates. Often “bad” carbs are lumped in with good carbs. Bad carb would include excess sugar and processed breads and pastas, especially detrimental in excess. Keep in mind that fruits and veggies contain mostly carbs – in a good way. Whole grains are also good. Balance and quality are key to a healthy diet.

Eliminate dessert and sugar
Often this can lead to annihilation because it leaves a person feeling deprived and craving. Most success stories are built on willpower, self-control, and little allowance. For instance a person that loves chocolate might decide on an allowance of one small piece of dark chocolate (loaded with healthy antioxidants) in the evening. This may help satisfy cravings but may still be a change from a previous habit of candy bars loaded with refined sugar. Quality and quantity come into play here.

Don’t eat after 6pm
Most experts seem to agree that it’s not so much time of day but amount of calories over the day in comparison to calories used. Looking at it this way, involves basic math. Now just make sure the calories you’re allowing yourself to consume are quality calories!

No snacks
It’s not so much snacks that make someone overweight, rather it’s the too many calories. Excess pounds of fat are created by too many calories in and too few used. It’s best to consume several smaller quality meals in a day rather than just one or two larger meals. Culturally we call them breakfast, lunch, and dinner – but if you’re okay with cutting portions and improving quality of our normal meals, and adding a couple – it could be your best bet for success.

IF you want a kick start to reach your goals, crash diets are not the answer but a nutritional cleanse may be helpful.  As toxins build up in our body, it can become harder to lose weight.  Naturally cleansing the body to help rid it of toxins can be helpful for our overall health, our energy level, and weight. A cleanse that nourishes and feeds the body while helping to remove and eliminate toxins is ideal. Try the Isagenix 9-Day Deep Cleanse and Fat Burning System which helps rid the body of built up toxins.  The system is so powerful that the average weight loss is 6-7 lbs in only 9 days.

Qualty food, a commitment to healthy lifestyle, and exercise are usually the keys to success when it comes to weight loss and improved health!

I wouldn’t mind trying a cleanse, where you eat fresh fruits and veggies for a week, but most other “fad” diets… I just can’t see myself thriving. Some are just flat out ridiculous, but dieting isn’t for me. I want a plan I can stick to for life. Not a diet for a little while. I definitely agree. Commitment to a healthy lifestyle is the way to go.
